Welcome to the Lab for Social Computing

Sam the Socialite

Hey! My name is Sam the socialite, if you have any questions about the LSC, I can help you out!

I am a big fan of social computing and can help you out whenever you need me. Common questions that people ask when they come to the Lab for Social computing website are about the following topics:

What is Social Computing?
What exactly is the Lab for Social Computing?
What kind of projects is the Lab working on?
How do I contact lab members?
How can I get involved with the Social Computing Club?
Where can I find a ton of information fast?

If you have a question and can't seem to find an answer by looking through the page, try a quick search. If you still can't find an answer, why don't you just 'Ask Sam' and I will get back to you as soon as possible!

Enjoy your stay!

BS in Information Technology

Undergraduate students interested in social computing have a range of options available to them through the BS in Information Technology degree.

The computer-mediated experience group in the IT department offers several concentrations related to social computing, including web development, interactive media development, game development, and web-database integration.

MS in HCI

A new MS in HCI is under development in the IT department. The new degree will include a track from the computer-mediated experience cluster in the department. Students choosing that track can select an online community concentration as part of their degree, as well as related electives from the department.

MS in Communication & Media Technologies

In the Communications Department, RIT offers a degree in Communication & Media Technologies, an interdisciplinary advanced program of study combining Liberal Arts courses in communication with course work in an applied or professional program. For more information on the CMT degree, contact LSC associate director Susan Barnes (sbbgpt [at] rit [dot] edu).

MS in Information Technology

The MS in Information Technology allows students to choose their areas of specialization. Concentrations in online communities, game development, web development, and HCI are all available and can be combined to create a customized IT master's degree. For more information on the MSIT with a social computing focus, contact Liz Lawley, the LSC director (ell [at] mail [dot] rit [dot] edu).

MS in Game Design & Development

A new MS in Game Design & Development has been in development for several years here at RIT. While not entirely focused on social software, this forthcoming program will contain both required and elective coursework that explores games as social software, and the online communities that surround and extend entertainment software.
